Mtiba history

1. CAREPAY

Back in 2015, CarePay was first established in Kenya with an initial investment from the M-PESA Foundation (funded by M-Pesa, a hugely popular mobile payment system launched by Safaricom/Vodafone) and the Investment Funds for Health In Africa (IFHA). Capitalizing on the mobile (money) revolution in Africa, CarePay partnered with PharmAccess Foundation and Kenyan telco Safaricom to develop a smart payment distribution platform branded as M-TIBA in Kenya.

2. The PharmAccess Foundation

As countries and states continue to strive toward attaining Universal Healthcare Coverage, (UHC) technology has been identified as a key component that would not only accelerate the process but also ensure a more effective and efficient system of operation for various financing mechanisms. More importantly, it is generally agreed that any technology adopted must be as lean as possible and reduce the cost of administration, thereby making more funds available for care.

3. M-PESA Foundation

When it comes to payments the Kenyan telecom giants have invested heavily and through a partnership from their foundation, carepay and pharmAcess brought about the m-tiba.

The partnership has made a huge impact already, connecting over 4.7 million users and 3,000 healthcare providers. Its scale and growth quickly attracted a growing number of public and private partners, including corporate employers, the Kenyan National Hospital Insurance Fund, institutional donors, and private insurers.

Since the success of M-TIBA in Kenya, CarePay has opened its HQ in Amsterdam to facilitate the international expansion of the platform to other countries, starting with Nigeria and Tanzania.

Funding

French Development Agency (AFD)2019

M-Tiba has received $1.5 million from French Development Agency (AFD) to facilitate its growing dependents and healthcare providers.
